SELF - HELP

Never going against your instinct. Hear your conscience. Listen carefully. Do what it tells you to.

Oprah says to overcome depression, tragedy, loss or any kind of emotional trauma, write a journal, a personal one. Although I’m one compared to her, I say, never ever write a personal diary. The least embarrassing thing that could happen to you is someone reading it and the worst thing that could happen is someone publishing the details in any kind of media, it could be word of mouth or blog and then all of your secrets are out for everyone to gawk at. Why am I so sure? Personal experience, you see. And so, right now, when I was in the deepest of pits because of some personal reason I would not like to disclose I wanted to vent myself which is when I discovered this innovative pretty- harmless-to- self way of alleviating my pain.

The answer is people, to write and that should be it. Write about anything except yourself and that leaves you with a hell lot of other topics like bitching about your ex- best friend who ditched you, as you got hooked up with a guy, who she had the hots for, to writing about American idol castoff Sanjaya Malekar or if you are not the gossip type then write about the discovery of 300 million year old fossils of a rainforest. Whew!

That’s a lot more uncomfortable or unnatural to come out of us, but it works and that’s what matters isn’t it? And, it is a lot less risky and a lot more fun especially if you’re a gossip lovin’ girl like me but hey let’s not forget not to overdo it. Or our writings could end up sabotaging someone’s public image.

As far as my experience goes, you get over whatever has been making you upset a lot quickly than if you would have been writing about that upsetting thing itself. In distracts you from what is troubling you and you feel good, light and calm. There is this peace that surrounds you, which not even a thousand hours of meditation would have made possible.

Tall, Olive skinned, Mischievous eyes, Raven Black hair thats perfectly rigid, a sculpted body and an apt smile. Truly handsome, isn’t it? Well, these are just a few of the good things that John possesses. His flawless demeanor just adds up to his credit as a “purrfect gentleman.”But, unlike other bollywood actors, John Abraham was never born with the silver spoon in his mouth. And also unlike Shahrukh, he never actually struggled for the sake of being a bollywood actor.

Born to a malayalee father and a parsi mother, he had a pretty much middle class childhood who just wanted to be good in studies and then get a proper 9 to 5 job. He was raised in an area known as ghatkopar in central Mumbai. After finishing his schooling from the prestigious Bombay Scottish and then completing his bachelors degree in Jai Hind college he went on to do his MMS from Mumbai Educational Trust (MET).Then he landed himself a job in a media firm. As luck would have it when one of the models did not turn up for a show John’s boss asked him to fill in his place. That was the stimulus! The rest of the good things just followed simply.

Then, he landed himself his first assignment, an ad for Live In Jeans. Later, he turned out to be the first runner up in Gladrags Manhunt '99 which got him many modelling assignments from respectable firms. But still he was not a popular figure in India. He did some music videos but then would soon be wiped out of public memory. His tryst with commercials continued.

But his first real movie break came to him when Pooja Bhatt offered him the lead role for Jism. It put John in the face of controversy due to the movies erotic nature but also brought him right under the spotlight. But he remained unhassled and the calmness proved to be of worth. Then John was just being seen in a trail of good movies. Paap, Dhoom, Lakeer, Karam, Viruddh and now Water all show John portraying a different character. But he has done his job with the utmost finesse.

One more thing worth mentioning about John is that he has never given in for anything, except his own belief. He believed in himself. He was asked to change his name while making an entry to the film industry because his name sounded too ‘angrezi’. He was also asked to cut his hair. He stuck to the name, stuck to the style and then there was born a new national icon.

Even recently, he was threatened not to act in the movie Water but John did it and it paid off well! It is evident how well Water has been acclaimed internationally.

Today, John is one of the most successful actors with a very successful personal life too. The actor and his girlfriend actress Bipasha Basu have been going on strong for almost five years now.

This is an incident which John fondly remembered in Simi Garewal’s talk show. It happened when he was a teenager . On an unguarded occasion he kept staring at his reflection in the mirror when his father crept up from behind him and asked, a bit amused, “Son, what do you think your doing? And John replied , “Dad, this face is going to sell products someday”. That day sure has arrived! John Abraham is a brand today.

HOME SWEET HOME

After spending two long days journeying in an unreserved compartment of Indian mail train, I still was bubbling like champagne. My father, unnerved by this extravagant display of energy by his daughter, asked me with a lil’ bit of concern , honey , aren’t u tired? I said, tired?! What tired dad? Im just so happy to be back home.

Well, of course, my home is not that big mansion up there, but whatever it is I really have learnt to appreciate this one room apartment we have.

It just so happens that I went to my native place to visit my grandparents. It is important to mention that their place is a totally unhealthy hybrid offspring of urban and typical rural. Like an urban house it has a modular kitchen, posh sofa and geyser in the bathroom. But like a rural hutch it does not have a TV . I was already moanin ‘bout da fact dat im gonna miss my sweet lil’ pc. But hey no tv? Excuse me? Its not even like they have doordarshan but no cable channels. Honestly , I’m modest enough to put up with that. But nope! Absolutely no piece of an idiot box in their room.

And yes I spent two days with the most underprivileged people in India during my journey home. I saw how their life worked. It rang a bell in my head I shouldn’t be complainin’ so much after all. There I was trapped in a corner of the upper birth. Its not even a birth in reality, its a luggage rack made of wood and no foam to comfort your gluteus maximus ( which I have not been blessed with much abundance you see). And when I had to pee I had to tiptoe my way to the loo ( which would of course be stinking like rotten corpse) by carefully placing them on top of the seats cuz people were there on the floor sleepin and if I even accidently happen to disturb them surely I would have had a cannon ball of abuses thrown at me. Then all night I had to sleep with a stranger’s cracked foot right in front of my face and all the time I kept worryin if by any chance it would collide with my nose. I felt like I was bein given corporal punishment. But what I was bein given was a valuable lesson in my life .

Suddenly, my cramped little room is appearing too big for me.

HOW COLLEGE CHANGED ME.

Like all other children, when I was in school, I used to look forward to grow up and go to “college”. Finally the long awaited day arrived and I was on my way to attend the first day of my fairly good college. Going to college was a great transition for me, considering the fact that it was quite far from where I did my schooling. ( My school is in kurla and I had to go to Vasai for college because I had shifted there.) I had left behind my school my teachers my friends, in short my whole so- called social life.

Since I came from an all girls school the male population in my college seemed intimidating . The first change that college brought into me was turn me from a bold uniform clad girl to a tiny timid rabit. ( I was four feet ten inches when I was in junior college , so yes , I did look tiny among the college crowd.) That was the first day.

Soon everything changed . I made new friends and I realized that unlike school friends, in college friends are not just friends but they formed my support system. College professors did not try to be my surrogate parents like my school teachers did. (To which I did not know how to react. I was like should I be happy or should I be not).

There was this tremendous amount of liberty bestowed upon me, it was overwhelming. I was the sole person responsible to take my decisions. And I was sole person to suffer the consequences of my decisions. ( Yes. Suffer. Because my decision to bunk lectures got my name into the blacklist and also got my parents summoned to the college.) The incident however taught me to take RESPONSIBLE decisions.

College opened my eyes as to how competitive the world is. In school the class teachers knew all of us pretty well and they also knew the talent every child had. So for any school occasion Tom , Dick and Harry were assigned to do hosting, singing and dancing respectively. Because they were the best in those fields. But in college raising your hands up wasn’t enough. You had to shoot your hands up. By the time you raise your hands up taking your own sweet time, someone else must have grabbed the opportunity. College changed me from the person who waits for the right opportunity to the person who struggles to get the opportunity. It taught me to take failure as a part of life but still never tire from running the race.

In college, we were required to do projects with deep research. We were given topics which delved into issues of societal concern. It changed my outlook of the society we live in. Such projects made me capable of empathizing with blind people and orphans. College turned me into a more aware citizen of this country.

College changed me from a kid to a responsible adult. It taught me to value the importance of liberty and responsibility. College changed my life , for good, for better.

Superstition - A Social Curse?

Superstition, by definition, is a belief or notion, not based on reason or knowledge. The word is often used as a derogatory term for the illogical beliefs of others. It is commonly applied to beliefs and practices surrounding luck, prophecy and spiritual beings, particularly the irrational belief that future events can be influenced or foretold by specific, unrelated behaviors or occurrences.

Most of the superstitions have no record as to who started it. The joke goes that centuries ago home makers found the concept of coining superstitions interesting and so made a ton of them. Though the majority of superstitions are harmless, some of them have drastic effects on the socio-cultural well being of human beings. In a country like ours, where illiteracy still thrives, following superstitions is at times not a matter of choice.

Prejudice against lepers, dalits and widows, considering a female baby being born as a burden to the family are some of the Indian superstitions that tend to do more harm than help. They end up hurting those at the receiving end of the superstitions. Let us be thankful that the horrid practice of sati has been abolished. However, there are secret groups that are sincerely trying to keep the practice alive.

Although nowadays it has become easy for lepers to get proper medical treatment, they do have a hard time overcoming the stigma as according to Indian superstitions the person is a cursed one by the Gods. In some villages, the dalits have no other choice but take up the job of being a scavenger. They are denied access to certain temples. They are forced to consume eatables from separate vessels. Its shocking that this still exists. But it’s a pity on our culture that it is true.

Even today family members hesitate to include a widow in auspicious celebrations, especially a marriage. A girl child, sadly, has much more superstitions to endure than a boy child. There are the murmurings on the day that she is born, and if she does not fall victim to a case of female foeticide, she has to go through the painstaking dowry system before her wedding. After her wedding for one year, her in-laws judge her auspiciousness by the amount of fortunes and misfortunes that happen during the first year of her marriage. And if a death occurs during the crucial one year period, the female has fallen into a pit of mocking that will continue for her life.

Let us, educated urbanites of a big and buzzing city like Mumbai, not feel smug about not falling prey to the aforementioned superstitions, for it is we who are ardent encouragers of vastu- shastra and feng shui. Many self – proclaimed experts in these fields are quite successful at squeezing out our money and time in the pretext of making our house a nest of good fortune.

Surely, hardwork and intelligence are more efficient at churning the wheels of riches. We are also affected by the horoscopes printed in the newspapers and God forbid if something not too fancy is written about our zodiac sign because then we end up sulking about it all day long.

Bollywood has a big hand in influencing the masses to gravitate towards the tangles of superstitions. They set an example to follow many irrational “logies” including numerology, astrology and tarot cards. Aren’t we all very well aware of Ekta Kapoor’s ‘K’ serials and the turquoise bracelet sported by actor Salman Khan?

Also, a particularly negative role has been played by a genre of films in Indian cinema. These films portray ``miracles'' taking place not in a mythological setting, but in contemporary life. Elephants representing Ganesha or cobras representing Shakti, the images of which are frequently exchanged in the course of the film, intervene constantly to rescue children, succour women in distress, cure people of illnesses or punish evil-doers.

Following superstitions not just hampers the scientific growth of our country but also defies the law put forth by our secular state, for, Article 51-A(h) of the Indian Constitution states that “it shall be the duty of every citizen of India... to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform”. Some superstitions are so severe, they threaten to shred the very cords of unity of our nation.

The interpretation of secularism as mere religious tolerance has led to the acceptance, in some quarters, of irrational religious practices, as acts that are beyond criticism and condemnation. Further, the justification of the right to pluralism in religious belief, becomes in the hands of some, the denial of the right to non-belief.

It is obvious, of course, that rationalism or scientific temper cannot be promoted only by exhorting the people to follow these principles. People need to be provided the tools whereby they can distinguish by themselves between obscurantism and science, between superstition and religion. They have to be made aware that it is okay to not believe in something. The only means to deliver this to them is through education. And for the already educated lot- scientific education must be stressed upon.

Let us take inspiration from our national leaders like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Bhagat Singh who strongly detested any form of superstition. Let us be encouraged by the likes of Raja Ram Mohun Roy who spearheaded the Indian renaissance movement. He brought about the abolition of sati, fought for legalisation of widow-remarriage and set an example by marrying a widow himself.

It is high time to stop and re-think the crazy flow in which we are so easily pulled in. It is the time to grow and not to grow stale by following a pattern of thought which is centuries old. It is time not to break the curse of superstition, but to stop believing in the entire concept of “curse” itself.

Eco - Friendly Festivals

Eco- friendly, as a single word is, an adjective that means non- damaging to the environment, or directed at preventing environmental damage. It is indeed a strange turn of the 21 st century that a word such as “eco- friendly festivals” has come to existence. Because festivals are meant for spreading cheer and happiness and not damaging the environment. But sadly the traditional aim of festivals of has given way to a more pompous and insensitive way of celebrations that causes considerable damage to mother nature.

Diwali, the festival of lights was originally celebrated with a simple puja at home and the lighting of diyas or oil lamps. Nowadays people give more importance to the bursting of firecrackers. And the firecrackers have metamorphosed from simple ones to giant ones increasing the amount of pollution they cause. These crackers have harmful chemicals such as Copper, Cadmium, Lead, Magnesium, Zinc, Sodium etc. They are the cause of many physical ailments, not to mention the smoke from these crackers can trigger an asthma attack easily. Also, some of these fireworks can make noise upto 100 decibals when they are burst. To boot, the traditional diyas are now accompanied by an array electrical bulbs to decorate the house and this results in an increased load on power consumption.

Ganesh Chaturthi is another festival that devout Hindus look forward to because it is the time when the popular elephant god graces their homes. There is one more endearing aspect of this festival- the fact that it unifies people from different religions during the immersion of the idols. However, it is this very immersion that gravely threatens the natural water bodies.
Traditionally, Ganpati idols were made of natural unbaked clay and organic colours. These have now been replaced by Plaster of Paris (POP), which is lighter and cheaper. POP contains chemicals such as gypsum, sulphur, phosphorus, and magnesium. The dyes used to colour these idols contain mercury, cadmium, arsenic, lead, and carbon. The idols are decorated with plastic and thermocol accessories. Such materials are non- biodegradable, hence are toxic. Moreover, the present generation is so high on the spirit of competitiveness that the idols get larger year after year and the larger the idols, the greater the environmental damage.

Holi, the Indian festival of colours, gaiety, fun and frolic is associated with Lord Krishna and his Gopis. Till the 1950s, families used to prepare their own colours from dried flowers in the form of powders called gulal and boiled them to get concentrated, deep wet colours. Such a colourful Holi was soon overtaken by commercialisation which started providing exotic colours but in a highly dangerous form. The industries make Purple from Chromium Iodide, Red from Mercuric Oxide, Green from Copper Sulphate, Black from Lead and Glitter from Mica and glass. All these are highly dangerous to the skin, eyes, respiratory tract, can cause renal disorder and some are even carcinogenic. They do not wash away easily, but get mixed in drains and sewage systems and pollute water bodies and the soil.

In order to contain the environmental damage it is not necessary to stop celebrating festivals altogether. What is required is that we simply switch to the traditional ways of celebrating them.

Let us celebrate Diwali with only diyas and make sure that the bursting of firecrackers does not go overboard. Also when we purchase new clothes for Diwali, instead of buying synthetic fabrics like silk (most commonly used textile for luxurious sarees) we should try to buy clothes made of hemp, jute, organic cotton, soy silk or milk silk.

Let us refrain from purchasing Ganpati idols made of POP. Let us always opt for idols made of unbaked natural clay, natural fibre, or even recycled paper. We must not use thermocol or plastic as decorations or accessories for our Ganpati idol. Instead we must use cloth, wood, paper, and other natural materials that are safer when immersed in water. If there is an artificial tank in our area specifically created for immersion purposes, we should use that instead of a natural source of water such as a lake or a stream.

Holi can be made a lot more fun if we adopted once again the tradition of preparing home-made colours known as gulal. Hues of red, green and pink can be made from flowers like tesu (Flame of the forest), harsringar, marigold, hibiscus, rose and other organic derivatives. These colors are not just safe for the human body but also have therapeutic value.

Moderation and replacement are the two keys to celebrating eco- friendly festivals. This will not only help save the environment but also help to understand the true meaning of festivities. It is time awareness has been created among the citizens. Once the awareness is created, many will be ready to change for the better. It is high time we stopped robbing environment of everything it has to give us. At least on the day of festivities let us respect God in a true manner by not harming His wonderful creation called 'Planet Earth'.

Mass Media Research: Media And Women

TOPIC CHOSEN: MEDIA AND WOMEN

This topic was unanimously chosen by the group members as it was assumed that media has changed everything about women in India. How has media affected women and in turn what have women contributed to the media in general? This basic question was tried to be tackled in our group discussion.

REASON FOR CHOOSING THE TOPIC

As media students, the group members were curious to know what the real situation of women is in today’s society. And, we wanted an unbiased and pragmatic answer. Was our assumption that all the changes pertaining to women had its root in media correct? Has media actually lead women to their liberation or has it created a pseudo reality where women think they are on par with men but are subconsciously manipulated by men or their own circumstances to do things that they do not want to? Such questions no doubt have had everyone puzzled, even women themselves. So bringing it on as the topic of discussion was one of the ways in which more light could be shed on the topic.

PREPARATION FOR GROUP DISCUSSION

Since this was a wide topic, the group members were perplexed as to where to start. But, later , all of us realized, that ideas and questions come up when we just speak about the topic. Soon questions were formed based on everyone’s curiosities. We found it very amusing indeed that we did not have to go scurrying for other sources of information in order to frame our questions.
Questions from the viewpoint of a male, from the viewpoint of a female, from the viewpoint of a student etc. were coined. We made sure we prepared plenty of questions so that we don’t run out of them in the middle of the group discussion. The questions were prepared in simple lucid language to make it easier for the participants to understand the question.

THE GROUP DISCUSSION

The group discussion went on smoothly. We had only nine instead of the usual ten participants. After each question was asked, we made it a point to explain the question to give the participants a better idea of what we are expecting as answers from them. This method really avoided the situation where the audience exhibits a stupefied silence due to their inability to grasp the question. We got loads of feedback from them. Many of their answers were indeed useful in preparation of our final questionnaire.

The following topics were discussed in the group discussion.

1) Exposure by women.
Selected participants said that this should not be a matter of concern. If the person who is wearing such attire is comfortable then it should not bother others. We are getting westernized day by day, this is just a part of that transition. But majority of the participants agreed that there exists an invisible line, atleast in our Indian society, which should not be crossed, if not for anything else but out of respect for our culture and tradition. Maybe Indians are influenced more by western culture but yet we haven’t started wearing bikini’s on our beaches simply because, our culture is different.
So most of the participants said that they do not agree with the media’s idea of increasing TRP’s with mini-skirts and plunging necklines. In fact, most of them are very much against the idea of using women as sex-symbols.

2) Usage of provocative slang words to address women.
In this case the media was convicted. The majority of the participants agreed that the media is only producing the products that are fast selling. And if we want to put an end to this trend of substituting provocative slang words in place of respectable words we should stop listening to such songs in protest.

3) Increasing sensuousness in media & its effect on growing girls.
According to the participants, media definitely affects growing girls and the media’s definition of beauty is stuck on the minds of female preteens and teens, which they carry with them even in their adulthood. Girls even as young as those in the eighth standard fall prey to diseases like bulimia and anorexia because they try to be sexy by starving themselves to death.
Surely a healthy take on feminine beauty and not just highlighting the sensuous attributes of females will help in providing a better way of thinking for growing girls. In this age where television sets are surrogate nannies, the people who control the content that is broadcast in television as well as the censor board authorities should filter out what would cause a negative impact on the nation’s daughters.

4) Media’s role in making society a safer place for women.
Media’s role in putting out a fight for women’s issues was well appreciated by the participants. But they also had opinions that sometimes the media just sensationalizes the issue without caring for the victim’s dignity, especially in rape and molestation cases. What the participants unitedly agreed on was that the media tries its level to uplift issues concerning women but unfortunately it hasn’t been able to help materialize the dream of a safe society for women.

Conclusion:

It is a matter of concern how physical exposure by women is increasing in big as well as small screen.
Media is responsible for provocative slang words to have become common.
Medias portrayal of beauty does affect growing girls.
Media has changed the way our society looks at women.
The teasing shown in Bollywood is inspiring the roadside romeos to do their tricks.
Not just the media but every normal citizen should help in making the society a better place for women.
Media has surely contributed for women to be on par with men but other factors such as education, urbanization, family background and social renaissance are also responsible. Education being the prime factor.

True Value

When they moved in
I had no clue,
That my neighbours’ daughter
Will turn my life blue.

The first few days were easy
The little monster was well behaved
But once she got her friends made
Her excited screams made me queasy.

Her torture increased by the days
I felt she had a conspiracy
To ruin my peace and tranquility
In a thousand different ways

When I complained to her mother
She told me to adjust
That, she was just an innocent child
So not to worry and bother.

Soon my fate turned the right way-
The father of my nemesis
Found a job in another state
He promptly took the kid away.

But sadly it did not help
I never got my groove back
I find myself yearning for the child
And, the way she made the dogs yelp.

A kind note for the tiny devil-
“You were not so troublesome
Neither were you too nasty
I agree I misunderstood you a little.

Now that you’re gone, I miss you
Hope your enthusiasm and cheer
Will brighten up many lives
Wherever you go, whatever you do”.

Reflection

I sat in front of the mirror
Looking at my face
The wrinkles and the grey hair
Made me curse times pace.

I remembered my youth
Its brilliance and beauty
Oh! The praises had made me blush
But now its lost for eternity.

Suddenly I hear the doorbell
I opened, to see my daughter
A perfect reflection of my youth
And now my loss doesn’t matter.

The grey hair and wrinkles
Is what I have earned
To be proud of it and not cringe
A fine lesson have I learnt.

Beauty is like mist
Quick to disappear
But with each new dawn
Greets everyone with cheer.

Rainbow After Storm

Lisa Kudrow had never been so nervous before. As an actress, she had been through a lot of cosmetic surgeries. When she was eighteen the casting director asked her to plump her lips, as they were too thin and lacked the required luster. She made her lips full by getting collagen injections. This was followed by micropigmentation for her eyebrows for her original brows were too thin. As she grew older, the knives got bigger and the recuperation more painful. She was now sixty and was lying on the steel operating table, under the influence of anesthesia and awaiting a major surgery, a facelift. It guaranteed to take her face twenty years into the past. The procedure was risky; she was made aware by her surgeon. But to run in the race of showbiz she knew she had to take it.
Dr. Joseph Anderson gave a peck to his wife Dr. Katie McBeal on her forehead. They both were standing right in front of the receptionists table. The receptionist looked fondly at the couple. She by now got accustomed to Dr. Joseph’s lucky charm. Before every surgery, he gave a peck to his wife, that too positioned right in front of the receptionists table. “What if the hospital underwent a major renovating stint?” Everyone would joke with Dr. Joseph. But he knew the possibilities of the hospital getting refurbished were zilch just as the possibility of his wife not turning up at the reception area five minutes after his call. He always thanked God for blessing him with a wonderful wife. Being in the same profession in addition to sharing the same workplace caused terrible fights between them. But he always felt guilty later and she would always wait up for him sulkingly. Five years as a friend, ten years as a lover and ten years as a wife, she had always been by his side.
Dr. Joseph entered the operation-theatre brusquely, recognized the face of his patient as the famous Lisa Kudrow and coolly got about his work.
“Scalpel please.” he said to a nurse.
* * *
After prescribing the post surgery treatment to the nurse in-charge, he left the hospital and got into his Porsche. His wife called him just then. She had a great sense of timing.
“How did it go, honey?”
“Great sweetheart, tell me what’s for dinner?”
“Umm. I just ordered Chinese food, is it fine?”
“Its fine sweety. Bye, take care.”
“ Bye, hon.”
At two am in the morning, Joseph was rudely roused from his sleep by a phone call. Although he was quite used to such midnight calls because of his profession it still irritated him nonetheless. It irritated him even more if the call was for his gynecologist wife. With his eyes still shut tight, he groped for the receiver.
“Hello, Dr. Joseph speaking.”
“Dr. Joseph, this is Adriana the nurse in-charge for tonight.”
“Yes Adriana, what’s the problem?”
“Doctor, its Lisa Kudrow, the one to whom you gave a facelift today. Her face has turned purple black. Is it normal?”
No, it wasn’t normal. Going red was normal. That’s how the skin reacts after being exposed to laser radiation, which is a routine follow up after the facelift. But purple black?! Oh God! This is new, thought Joseph. The news unnerved him. But as a doctor, he was taught to be calm even under the most trying circumstances.
“Can you specify the regions which have acquired the color?”
“Well, doctor, it’s hard to say. At present, her face is completely covered in a blanket of purple-black. But the color transition had started from around the nostrils, the hairline on the forehead, under the eyes… basically from all the places where the incision was made.”
“I’ll be there in twenty minutes, make sure it doesn’t spread farther.”
“We cant, we don’t know what caused it.”
“Well then keep trying to find the cause will you?”
Bang! Joseph hung up on the nurse.
* * *
Joseph rushed to his patient and with all of his expertise managed to stop any further damage. A bit of relief. But later after sixteen whole hours, Joseph felt an appalling sense of defeat clouding over him, because he could not undo what's already been done to Lisa Kudrow’s face. How could he when the root cause never came to the surface?
The elderly actress’s face was now as pigmented as of an African woman. Since she was a celebrity, every news channel reported the incident during primetime. Katie was patiently answering all of the phone calls from various media persons. Lisa wasn’t allowed to see her face yet. The papers that she signed before the operation bound her from doing so. But the papers did not stop her from contacting her attorney and sue Dr. Joseph.
A day later, a notice arrived at Joseph’s home. He was in dire depression leaving Katie to handle everything. She opened the notice and read the damage charges pressed against her husband by Lisa. They were ordered to pay half a million dollars as compensation.
“Jesus!” Katie thought. “This is going to put us in heavy financial crisis.”
The amount wouldn’t have been that big if it were not for the tuition fees that they were footing for their twin daughters in Stanford University.
Two days later Katie had smoothly finished paying the compensation with the help of her generous father. It helped that her father Mr. Mark McBeal was a retired judge. Thanks to him, all the legal formalities were easily taken care of.
Now Katie had to take care of Joseph. Joseph was starting to doubt his abilities as a cosmetic surgeon. After the misfortune, he declared he would never operate on anyone. He blamed himself for being an inefficient doctor. He held himself responsible for being overconfident. It did not help that the media, too, continued to butcher his image as a doctor.
Katie knew she had to take control. If only she could know the cause of that day’s accident, she might be able to help her husband. She called the hospital and asked them to send her a videotape of the surgery and the detailed handwritten reports too.
She then called Joseph's mentor Dr. Antonio Salvez to review the video and the written material. Surprisingly, both of them could find nothing wrong.
“What was it that Joseph did to make Lisa’s face go black?” Katie questioned, her voice filled with anxiety.
“Katie,” Dr. Antonio, replied, “Have you ever thought of the possibility that your husband was never at fault?”
“How, Antonio? It was Joseph who operated on Lisa!”
“Yet we both, even after such scrutiny couldn’t find a thing that went wrong, could we?”
“You’re right. We couldn’t.”
“I’ll tell you where I think the problem is, Katie, the problem lies with the post operative care. Check on the nurse who was assigned to look after Lisa on the night of the surgery.”
When Katie called at the hospital, she came to know that the nurse who was assigned to look after Lisa resigned two days after the disastrous incident took place. Now Katie knew that there was something more to what met her eye. She was amazed and at the same time glad because now she had hope that what she found supported Antonio’s theory of someone other than Joseph being at fault. She called the local police and informed them that she suspected a nurse named Adriana with regard to actress Lisa Kudrow’s mishap. Then she called her father judge McBeal to catalyze the investigations. Soon Adriana was tracked to be living in another state in a huge mansion.
Meanwhile Antonio tried to rouse Joseph from his depression by telling him that it wasn’t his fault after all and that all this time he was feeling guilty for someone else’s crime. Joseph at first couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Then it dawned on him that this is the light at the end of the long dark tunnel he was passing through. In a matter of minutes his depression transformed into fury.
Before he knew he yelled at his mentor, “Who and for what reason made me a scapegoat? I want the answer and I want it damn soon!”
* * *
Damn soon came thirty-six long hours later. It was divulged that Adriana was not entirely guilty but was an accomplice. She was paid by Lisa Kudrow’s long time professional rival Goldie Hawn to ruin Lisa’s post operative treatment. Goldie chose a professional nurse like Adriana because she wanted irreversible damage done to Lisa or to be more specific, her way of making a living, her face. She paid Adriana well, a billion dollars. But now Goldie was going to pay big-time with her whole life behind bars.
Joseph, as soon as his name got cleared renewed work with full gusto. When Adriana revealed how she adulterated Lisa’s post operative treatment, it was easy for Antonio and Joseph to find a remedy. Both of them performed a corrective surgery on Lisa, which leaved the lady quite blemishless. Katie and Antonio were honored at a small function, for their presence of mind. The function was attended by the local police and the hospital staff. Joseph continued following his superstitious ritual of giving a peck on his wife’s forehead, right in front of the receptionist’s table!

The End.
